Anthony Davis hasn’t played in an international basketball game since the 2014 FIBA World Cup, but that could change in 2024.
Davis said he plans to compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics if Team USA management requests it.
“LeBron asked me last year and I told him, ‘If they ask me, I’m in.’ So, I’m just waiting for that request,” Davis said on Spectrum SportsNet (9:40).
The Paris Olympics could end up being a once-in-a-lifetime send-off for some of the best athletes. Kevin Durant publicly committed to playing for Team USA, while LeBron James and Stephen Curry both expressed interest during media day.
“We’ll see what happens. As far as physical injuries, I’ll see how I feel at the end of the season,” James said. “With the guys we have, I don’t think it’s going to be too hard on the body. I don’t have to do a lot. Rebound a little, pass a little, block some shots.”
James hasn’t competed internationally since the 2012 Summer Olympics, and Curry has never been an Olympian. The Golden State Warriors star won two World Cups but was left off the 2012 roster and declined to compete in the 2016 or 2020 Summer Olympics.
James, Curry and Durant are all in their 30s, and next summer will be their last chance to shine on the international stage. It could serve as the “last dance” of a generation of basketball.
At 30 years old, Davis is much younger than the three mentioned above, but there is a slim chance that he will still be willing and able to compete in Olympic basketball in 2028. Assuming he’s healthy, this will be his last chance to do it with one of the most star-studded teams in history.
