Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James is receiving some serious backlash and criticism on social media after he expressed his thoughts on the violence taking place between Israel and Hamas.
James took to social media on Wednesday to condemn Hamas’ violence, making clear it was terrorism while pledging support for Israel and the Jewish community.
The thoughts prompted reactions on Instagram from the likes of author and activist Shaun King and international player Ali Haidar.
Haidar played for Beirut Club of the Lebanese Basketball League and played at Michigan Technological University in the United States.
The NBA and NBAPA issued a joint statement on Sunday also condemning acts of terrorism.
The Brooklyn Nets are scheduled to face Israeli professional team Maccabi Ra’anana in a preseason game on Thursday. Nets forward Nick Claxton said he doesn’t think the game should be played, but Israel reportedly wants to go ahead.
Hamas’ first attack on Saturday reportedly killed more than 1,300 people in Israel. As of Thursday afternoon, Israel continued a series of air strikes and prepared for a possible ground invasion.
James has used social media in the past to express his thoughts on a number of topics, including the Black Lives Matter movement. He has a long history of working off the field to help disadvantaged populations through his I Promise schools and business ventures, helping individuals and families in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. He also launched the More Than One Vote initiative ahead of the 2020 presidential election in an attempt to combat voter suppression.
The 38-year-old has also been criticized in the past for some of his public stances.
The latest backlash comes as the icon is entering his 21st NBA season. He was reportedly “extra engaged” in Lakers training camp, especially as a leader.
They wrap up the preseason with three more home games, including Friday’s game against the Golden State Warriors, and begin the NBA regular season on Oct. 24 at the defending champion Denver Nuggets.
