LeBron James’ agent Rich Paul reveals why he negotiated infamous move to Miami Heat

He believes players like James should feel empowered to exercise their options as stars in order to remain relevant, especially if they find themselves in a situation with a team that doesn’t meet their expectations, even if the team can trade Players, so players shouldn’t do this either. “What I should have done is educate myself to where this wasn’t going the way I thought it was going and I could change,” Paul said. “What’s the point of having money but no options?”

In James’ first seven seasons with the Cavaliers, the team reached the Finals just eleven times, losing to the San Antonio Spurs and the other four times in the conference semifinals.

James’ initial decision to leave Cleveland for Miami in 2010 was met with both support and criticism from fans. Because of the precedent set by Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, it’s unusual for a player of his caliber to leave the team that originally drafted him, especially while he’s still in his prime.

James returned to the Cavaliers in 2014, regained favor in Cleveland, and won the NBA Finals in 2016 before switching to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018. Later, Paul became Anthony Davis’ agent and helped James win a championship with the Lakers. In 2019, he helped plan the deal for Davis and James to join the Lakers.

Davis famously made a public trade request in January 2019 even though he was under contract with New Orleans. Paul says this request was made according to his instructions.

“If it’s a guy who doesn’t look like me, that’s genius,” Paul said of what was then considered the most polarizing figure in the NBA. “That’s why you have a super agent.”

Last year, Paul negotiated contract extensions with James and Davis to stay with the Lakers. James signed a two-year extension in September 2022 and Davis signed a three-year extension in August.
