LeBron James and Anthony Davis lock down Group A after dominating Jazz

The Los Angeles Lakers faced off against the Utah Jazz in the final game of the season tournament group stage, a game with a lot at stake as a win would mean they would lock up a spot in the quarterfinals.

The Lakers performed significantly better in the in-season tournament, saving their best for last, beating the Jazz 131-99 to secure the top spot in Group A.

LeBron James came on fire early in the game and continued to score at an elite level. James was efficient in every part of the floor, especially from downtown, where he went 3-of-5 from the field on the night.

Los Angeles played so well on both ends of the floor that James only played 24 minutes and sat out the entire fourth quarter. He scored 17 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists that night.

James also set another career milestone, becoming the first player in NBA history to score 39,000 points.

Anthony Davis had a big day in the paint as the Jazz were short-handed at center with Walker Kesler out. Davis only attempted one mid-range shot in the game, which was perfect because he was undefendable anywhere near the rim.

Davis punished Utah’s small-ball lineup with putbacks and easy dunks and layups and ensured Los Angeles never trailed. Davis led all scorers with 26 points on 11-of-14 shooting, but he also added 16 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals in just 29 minutes.

Like James, Davis was able to rest the entire fourth quarter.

D’Angelo Russell was outstanding offensively and continued his excellent offensive form against the Jazz, being patient on the court and staying hot from beyond the arc. Like Davis, Russell was incredibly efficient on the court, shooting 7-for-9 from the field, including 3-for-4 from long range.

Russell scored 20 points and 8 assists, becoming the team’s second scorer and assist leader.

Austin Reaves was great off the bench, and the third-year guard had some big plays and highlights. Reeves showed off some of his ball-handling skills as he made some nice moves all the way to the basket.

Reeves led all substitute scorers with 19 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

What’s next for the Lakers?

The Lakers will face the Dallas Mavericks in the second game of a back-to-back on Wednesday. They’ll then have a few days off before embarking on a four-game road trip.
