The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Phoenix Suns 122-119 in the in-season championship game on Friday. LeBron James played 36 minutes and scored 32 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists. Kevin Durant led the Suns with 38 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists in 39 minutes of playing time.
Both teams are currently 4-5, tied for second-to-last in the Pacific Division, behind the Golden State Warriors (6-4) and Sacramento Kings (4-4) but ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers (3-3). For those unfamiliar with college football, Michigan is the second-ranked team in the country with a perfect 10-0 record. Jim Harbaugh is widely considered one of the best coaches in the country…some might say, maybe a little too good.
Michigan State was recently accused of sending a low-level staffer to games across the country to steal signs that the Wolverines could then use to their advantage on game day when teams were on the schedule.
As a result, Harbaugh is suspended for the remainder of the season. He can still coach practices, but when he laces up his shoes on Saturday, he’ll have to watch captain OC Sherrone Moore from home.
Of course, LeBron is a huge Ohio State fan. The Buckeyes don’t like the Wolverines. Some of James’ sports fandom tends to go with the flow (was he a Dallas Cowboys fan? A San Francisco 49ers fan? We may never know), but he was a Buckeyes fan until the very end. He grew up in Akron, Ohio, just a stone’s throw from the Oregon State University campus in Columbus.
The sign-stealing scandal in which Harbaugh was involved is a point of contention, but it’s clear that Michigan State wronged the Big Ten. Now, the consequences have arrived. Kudos to James for his creative and intelligent answer to a legitimate basketball question.
Frank Vogel coached James and the Lakers for three years. Now, in Phoenix, the stage is set for a legitimate rivalry between two familiar contenders. However, as James hinted, he will be able to suit up for future games with the Suns. Harbaugh wasn’t so lucky when Michigan faced Ohio State on Saturday, Nov. 25.
