One of the LEGO Star Wars 75354 USS Coruscant minifigures is impressively detailed and a huge disappointment.
Although he was very impressed with Palpatine’s attention to detail, Brick FanaticsMatthew was disappointed with the Senator’s Padmé minifigure when he got his hands on the LEGO Star Wars 75354 Coruscant Guard gunship for review. Compared to Palpatine’s carefully drawn lines and wrinkles, Padmé’s face is a blank and frankly boring canvas, but Matthew has a theory to explain why.
In the past, Padmé was easily recognizable on sets such as 9515 Evil and 75021 Republican Gunship by a distinctive mole on her left cheek — a mark that actress Natalie Portman has and even carried over into the animated versions of Padmé.
However, the head used in 75354 Coruscant Guard Gunship appears to be the same head used for the Mighty Thor in sets such as 76207 Attack on New Asgard. After all, Natalie Portman plays both of these characters, so it’s easy and neat to do it…right?
Well, the only problem with this solution is that the Mighty Thor is designed to always wear a helmet. The set does not include a chignon, so unless you want to portray her as bald, she will have to wear a helmet that covers most of her face, making the mole completely useless. This works for the mighty Thor from the LEGO Marvel set, but in the world of LEGO Star Wars we’re left with a dim Padmé who doesn’t look like the character at all – or anything other than a motley woman.
“The mole on her cheek is the easiest way to make Padmé look like a Padme minifigure,” notes Matthew. “Its inclusion would also help achieve the LEGO Group’s goal of making more diverse and inclusive minifigures.”
This follows a frustrating trend among female minifigures where their personality is heavily marked, as Matthew notes, “a few lashes and full lips”. Comparing this Padmé to the Palpatine included in the same set, she has much more definition around her chin, cheeks, and forehead to express her character and face shape, while Padmé remains completely featureless.
