SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 18 October 2023 – Mark your calendars from 9 to 21 November 2023 for vOilah! The French Film Festival returns to Singapore with its biggest ever lineup yet. 39 films reflecting the essence of French cinema are represented by 38 films.th The publication promises an unforgettable journey through the worlds of cinematic storytelling. Film lovers can immerse themselves in a variety of genres to suit every cinematic taste, from thought-provoking documentaries to thrilling blockbusters, including 16 family-friendly films aimed at younger audiences.

Deeply rooted in Singapore’s cultural landscape and the oldest foreign film festival here, the French Film Festival continues to celebrate the enduring success of bilateral relations between the two countries,” said French Ambassador to Singapore Ms Minh-Di Tan. “This year we are also excited to present a carefully curated selection of truly compelling stories that highlight pressing environmental issues. Through these films, we aim to promote important dialogue about our environment, inspiring positive change.”
Shedding light on environmental issues
’39 was a significant step towards global awareness.th Voila edition! The French Film Festival is taking a bold initiative to promote environmental awareness, a cause that resonates deeply with audiences in both France and Singapore. A special segment will focus on this important issue with the goal of raising awareness and sparking important conversations about climate change.
The festival will begin with the long-awaited animal kingdom (Le Règne Animal), directed by Thomas Cayley. Premiere of the opening film of the esteemed Un Certain Regard section at Exhibition 76.th Cannes Film Festival, this gripping story stars Roman Douris, Paul Kircher and Adele Exarchopoulos. The film takes place in a world besieged by a mysterious plague that turns people into animals. This dystopian story serves as a powerful metaphor, depicting a world devastated by the actions of humanity.

A French Film Festival that will allow us to once again bring the latest French films to a wider audience through our cinemas,” said Christopher Shaw, Senior Vice President of the Shaw Organization. “This year, our added focus on environmental issues demonstrates that film serves as a powerful tool for sparking vital conversations and driving meaningful change.”
Other key impressions in this segment include Bright (Live) by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, a documentary exploring France’s biodiversity, and Acid Just Philippot, a thrilling story of survival amid a deadly acid storm.
Celebrating the excellence of French cinema
Highlighting the pinnacle of French cinema, the festival will present The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan (The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan), a box office sensation directed by Martin Bourboulon. Adapted from the classic novel by Alexandre Dumas, the film marks the first chapter of an epic two-part saga. Featuring a star-studded ensemble that includes Eva Green, Vincent Cassel, Francois Civil, Pio Marmay and Romain Duris, the film promises a thrilling experience for thrill-seekers.
What follows is a series of acclaimed films. Anatomy of a fall, a Palme d’Or winner at the Cannes Film Festival, which explores the aftermath of a mysterious death and weaves a gripping crime mystery around Sandra and her visually impaired son. Directed by Justine Trieu, the film unravels a web of uncertainty where a turbulent marriage takes center stage in a court case. Another headline worth noting: A taste of things (“The Passion of Daudin-Bouffant”), chosen to represent France in the category “Best International Feature Film” at the 96th festival.th Oscar, which captures the charming romance between Doden, a renowned gourmet, and her devoted cook Eugenia. The film is directed by Chan Ang Hung, who won the Best Director award at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
French cinema is accessible to everyone
To make French cinema accessible to everyone, the festival will renew its long-standing partnership with the People’s Association and will host ten free, family-friendly film screenings at 7 community clubs and integrated centers across the island. Viewers can look forward to films like Samuel Tournai’s 2021 animated feature. Around the world in 80 Days And Calamity, Martha Jane Cannery’s Childhood, which won the Crystal Award for Feature Film at the 2020 Annecy International Animated Film Festival. With an emphasis on inclusivity, most shows have been dubbed into English to ensure enjoyment for audiences of all ages.
The festival is expanding its horizons: Sentosa will host 5 out of 10 open-air screeningsth until November 12. These free screenings, part of Sentosa’s Movies by the Beach open-air cinema series, will be complemented by Sentosa’s French-themed festive market hosted by the Sunday Social Market. Beach lovers may see names such as Alina, Voice of Love, Jungle group And Belle and Sebastian: The Next Generation against the picturesque backdrop of Palawan Beach in Sentosa.
Anthony Chen, Singaporean director and patron of this year’s vOilah festival! The French Film Festival says: “Films are windows into different worlds, and it is important that good films are accessible to everyone. The French Embassy’s mission is to bring the magic of French cinema to the masses – it is not just entertainment, it is a celebration of shared stories and collective experiences.”
The festival is also renewing its partnership with iconic local independent cinema, The Projector. Together with 39th Voila! French film festival Projector will host the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, which will feature films such as the Palme d’Or winner. Anatomy of a fall Justine Triet, Kaouther Ben Hania’s gripping docudrama Four daughterslong-awaited Book of Solutions Michel Gondry and the sci-fi animated film Mars Express Directed by Jeremy Perin.
The Projector will also present a retrospective, Je t’aime, Jane, dedicated to the memory of the late French actress, singer and fashion icon Jane Birkin. The program will include screenings of Jacques Deray’s 1969 film. Pool (La Piscine) and Jane B. for Agnes V.1988 experimental documentary film directed by Agnès Varda.
Greetings to the stars of French cinema
Voyla! The French Film Festival is delighted to welcome director Thomas Cayley and rising star Paul Kircher for an exclusive Q&A following the film’s debut screening. animal kingdom (Le Règne Animal), at Shaw Theaters Lido, 10th.th November and at the Alliance Française de Singapore 11.th November.
Vincent Perez, director Blade tip (Une Affaire d’Honneur), a gripping historical play about duel and honor, will be accompanied by his co-star and screenwriter Karine Sylla to present his film ahead of its release in France on September 19.th November at Shaw Theaters Lido and 20th November at the Alliance Française de Singapore. Viewers can expect a meaningful discussion with the couple after the film.
After numerous wins at the recent Margritte Awards, directors Emmanuelle Marret and Julie Lecustre will also be in town to present Zero fucks (Rien à Foutre), a comedy-drama about a jaded flight attendant forced to confront her past. Viewers can look forward to a Q&A session with the couple at the Alliance Française de Singapore on January 21.st. November.
