Liguria: one in four workers is at risk due to artificial intelligence

Arthur J. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick predicted this in 2001: A Space Odyssey about half a century later: artificial intelligence risks causing a real social earthquake, reduction of millions of skilled jobs. Except for Hal 9000, the supercomputer that rebels against the astronauts. (pictured is actor Keir Dullea in the chilling final scene of the film).). Here, in Italy alone, 8.4 million workers are at risk due to the spread of artificial intelligence.. And in Liguria, 23.5%, almost one in four workers, see themselves as a threat. We are the sixth region in the “AI danger” ranking.

The assessment was carried out by Conartigianato, which analyzed “the extent to which AI is exposed to our labor market.” The conclusions are radical: “36.2% of the total number of employees will suffer from deep technological transformations and automation processes.” The most vulnerable region is Lombardy, then Lazio. Among the “workers in the balance” in Europe, “Germany and France are worse off than we are” and 59.4% stands out in Luxembourg. However, as President Marco Granelli assures, AI “should not be feared, but controlled with a skillful intellect.”

The percentage of workers at risk due to the impact of artificial intelligence on our labor market, according to a report compiled by Confartigianato, is “3.3 points lower than the 39.5% of the European average of workers most affected by Germany and France.” are in a worse position than we are with 43% and 41.4% of the workers on the balance sheet respectively, and Luxembourg even with 59.4%, followed by Belgium with 48.8% and Sweden with 48%. The most open professions “are the most skilled and have intellectual and administrative content, ranging from information and communication technology technicians, administrative and commercial managers, commercial and management science professionals, science and technology professionals, public administration managers”, in while “among the lower-risk jobs are jobs with a non-standardized manual component.”

According to the Conartigianato, “the spread of artificial intelligence threatens 25.4% of workers entering companies in 2022, which corresponds to 1.3 million people. For small companies with up to 49 employees, the share is 22.2%, which corresponds to 729,000 people.”

The indicator was also calculated by regions: “At the territorial level, the highest percentage of personnel in the balance sheet is recorded in the center-north, while Lombardy leads (35.2% of employees hired in 2022 are most affected by AI), followed by Lazio (32%), Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta (27%), Campania (25.3%), Emilia-Romagna (23.8%), Liguria (23.5%).

No hope? The Confartigianato report highlights that “artificial intelligence is a weapon that companies use to optimize their operations. In particular, 6.9% of our small businesses use robots, which is higher than the European average of 4.6% and, in particular, double the rate in Germany (3.5%). In addition, 5.3% of SMEs use AI systems, and 13% plan to invest in AI applications in the near future.”

“Artificial intelligence,” concludes Conartigianato President Marco Granelli, “is a means, not an end. It should not be feared, but managed by artificial intelligence to make it a tool that can increase the creativity and unique skills of our entrepreneurs. There is no robot or algorithm that can replicate the knowledge of artisans and imitate the soul of the beautiful and well-made products and services that make Made in Italy unique in the world.” In other regions, after Liguria, the “ranking” of “workers in the balance” compiled by Confartigianato is continued by Sicily (23.2%), Friuli-Venezia Giulia (22.9%), Veneto (22.6%), Tuscany (21.1%). , Calabria (20.8%), Trentino-Alto Adige and Umbria (19.9%), Apulia (19.8%), Molise (18.6%), Marche (18.4%), Sardinia (18 .3%), Abruzzo (17.5%), Basilicata (16.7%). %).
