Lil Wayne’s NBA Finals pick and why Steph Curry reminds him of Tom Brady

Lil Wayne has been a long-time NBA fan and often references players in his music.

The rapper sat courtside with his son, Cameron Carter, during a recent game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns. The two wore microphones on Bleacher Report, capturing a lot of the fun banter between father and son.

Wayne also made his Finals pick: Milwaukee Bucks vs. Milwaukee Bucks. Golden State Warriors, which was a surprise for his son.

“I didn’t expect you to say Warriors,” Cameron said.

Wayne’s logic? At this point in his career, Warriors star Stephen Curry has some similarities with legendary quarterback Tom Brady.

“To me, leaving Steph out is like it used to be to leave Brady out,” Wayne told his son. “Those years with the Patriots, you thought they weren’t going to be there, and then they’d be in the Super Bowl. That’s how I felt about Steph. Every time I was ready to say, ‘Yeah, Steph’s run is over.’ ‘, that boy is in the finals.”

The entire evening looked like a fun experience for the Carter family. They briefly discussed Cameron’s homework (history and Spanish from the night before) and Wayne shook his head in disbelief. They discuss Austin Reeves’ development, becoming one of the Lakers’ leading scorers and his performance with Team USA over the summer. Wayne confided to Cameron (and the bleacher microphone) that he believed the Lakers could make a move for Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid. LeBron James stopped to shake hands with Wayne during warm-ups, and he greeted Cameron: “What’s up, young man?” Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell also came over to greet them both and handed Carmel a Long a basketball, which seemed to briefly confuse him.

“He was talking about you,” Wayne clarified. “That’s all yours.”

The game itself was an interesting matchup between James and Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant, with Durant’s free throws making the Carters very happy.

“That looks so stupid,” Wayne mocked laughing from his seat.

Finally, when James completed a wonderful layup with 41 seconds left in the game, extending the Lakers’ lead to 4 points, the two responded with warm applause. The Lakers ultimately won 100-95.

“He had to let them know whose house he was at,” Wayne said. “KD is going crazy right now. He has to let KD do this now.”

“That’s a huge bucket,” Cameron agreed.

The Lakers are off to a 1-2 start after losing to the Kings on Sunday. Wayne’s finals picks are 1-1 (Bucks) and 2-1 (Warriors).
