Lionel Messi’s World Cup jersey on track to surpass Michael Jordan’s $10 million jersey world record

Six jerseys worn by Argentina during their 2022 World Cup victory are up for auction, and there is a lot of anticipation for the upcoming auction. The jerseys are expected to become “the most valuable collection of sports memorabilia,” with an estimated value of more than $10 million.

The shirts will be on display and auctioned at Sotheby’s New York headquarters from November 30 to December 14.

The current record is held by Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals jersey, which sold for $10.1 million. If the prediction holds true, Messi’s jersey will surpass this number and set a new record for sports memorabilia.

Among those jerseys was the one Messi wore when he opened the scoring in the first half of the final.

The other was worn in the final, when Messi scored two goals in a 3-3 draw with France.

As a generous gesture, an undisclosed portion of the auction proceeds will be allocated to the UNICAS project.

The initiative, led by the Children’s Hospital of Sant Joan de Dou (SJD) in Barcelona and supported by the Leo Messi Foundation, aims to meet the needs of children battling rare diseases.

Michael Jordan’s jersey from Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals sold at auction for a record-breaking $10.1 million, becoming the most expensive sports jersey ever sold at auction.

Jordan wore the jersey during a pivotal moment in his career, breaking previous records for basketball jerseys, game-worn sports memorabilia and any Michael Jordan item.

In early 2022, the famous “Hand of God” jersey worn by Diego Maradona in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England sold at auction for $9.28 million .

The record-breaking sale solidified the jersey’s status as the second most expensive sports jersey ever sold at auction.

This shirt has become synonymous with one of the most iconic goals in football.

In addition, Michael Jordan’s 1982-1983 University of North Carolina Tar Heels jersey sold for $1.38 million, setting a new record for a Jordan jersey at auction.

The fact that the only jersey Jordan wore when he was named Player of the Year on the cover of The Sporting News that season proved to be a lifetime achievement, making this jersey extremely valuable.
