The return of the hipster brings with it a series of unforgettable stylistic codes that characterized the entire turn of the century fashion scene. Among these, sagging (from the English “to sag”: sagging, yielding): the trend that makes you wear low-waisted pants, but so low as to show a good part of your underwear. Any examples? Tupac, Eminem, Nelly, even Justin Bieber. Far and wide, the world of music has become the mouthpiece of a custom as cool as – later – derided. In fact, no one would have imagined that sagging would once again dominate the trends in 2023.

The first “saggers” were American prisoners, who were forbidden to wear a belt to avoid the risk of suicide. But upon their release, the custom also accompanied them out of prison, in order to recognize each other. Sagging also had its beginnings among the poor families of the ghetto who handed down pants from son to son, often in much larger sizes. From the streets to the stage, sagging became a symbol of belonging to the hip hop culture, and from baggy pants it then moved on to Bermuda shorts and skinny jeans, with punk rock and emo music. In recent years, sagging has returned to being cooler than ever: Miu Miu brought it to the catwalk under miniskirts for 2022 and 2023, Givenchy introduced it in the men’s show for summer 2023 and Mowalola the he rest extreme during his last winter show. Are you ready to get rid of the belt?
