Mad Cool Festival 2023 is starting again with the things we loved most about the previous editions: a line up Loud, choreographed Ferris wheels and endless expanses of artificial turf. To accommodate the growing number of spectators, this year it was decided to hold the event in the Marconi Colony, south of Madrid. With its ten-hectare expanse, the chosen venue, not far from the terminus of a metro line, was considered the best site to deal with logistical transport problems and increase the musical offering, allowing eight shows at once.
As always, this year too there was some controversy for some controversial choices by both the public administration (which sponsored the event) and the organizers. kermesse, Metro service at night was only partially ensured (only one line was operating with a few guaranteed stops) and on the way back the line of taxis was lost beyond the horizon. On the other hand, inside the Madcool area, traffic jams were often generated due to the non-strategic choice of positioning the bathrooms in the central island with only one entrance. People often choose to take less canonical routes rather than hit the crowds going in the opposite direction of the stream. Training Or to freshen yourself up. Of course these problems were dramatized on the last evening, which was attended by an audience of about seventy thousand. However, despite several social protests that took place in the days that followed, the 6th edition of Madcool concluded with great peace and frolic.
On introductory day, the first star musician to perform is Offspring. Under a scorching sun, for half of the show, the Californian band performs songs from their most successful albums (“Smash” and “Americana”) and only one song from the most recent, “Let the Bad Times Roll”, a cover of which is located backstage. Dexter Holland’s voice hasn’t been in the best of times, but his ability to entertain fans has remained unaffected. Most of the parts of the show are liked by the public and create a ruckus. it will be one of leitmotif recurring at later concerts, in which people would find creative ways to engage in more wild dances. For example, at a later performance by Machine Gun Kelly, people in the audience spontaneously create different “craters” for the purpose of creating a dance floor within which to dance. Since these improvised spaces are connected to each other, a whirlwind of people is generated during the performance, which cheerfully collide with a special natural effect. On his part, the American singer makes no small contribution to stirring up the crowd by singing in Spanish, climbing between the scenes and mingling with people in the VIP area.
Undoubtedly one of the most attractive aspects of these great festivals is the possibility to attend important concerts while you are here. Training minor. For example, in prime time alone, he performs on stage number three. parterres Featuring artistes who will add to the joy of any concert. In fact, Paolo Nutini, The 1975, Rina Sveyama, Franz Ferdinand and the eagerly awaited Sigur Rós alternate. Surprisingly, the latter plays nothing from his latest work “Atta”, but alternate songs from his previous albums, opening the concert with “Tuck” and “Glossoli” and concluding with a standout version of “Untitled #8”.
Icelanders captivate audiences with their minimalist yet emotionally powerful music. In a landscape favored by chiaroscuro, Birgisson uses a bow to play the guitar and stretches his ethereal voice that conveys melancholy, sadness and deep sweetness at the same time.
Prime Time also features the cast Mainstream Eagerly Anticipated (Lizzo, Lil Nas X), is the event that draws the most public attendance Display Staged by Robbie Williams, close to midnight. Accompanied by the corps de ballet, his orchestra and his unfading and limitless ego, the historic English artist entertains the audience with his most famous songs, dedicating “Love My Life” and “She’s the One” to some of the audience in the first lines and telling many anecdotes, especially those relating to stormy relationships with the other members of Take That.
The space where dEUS works is decidedly more intimate. The “Uigo” arena, typically used to host concerts that are more intimate than the main stages, reserves very flashy shows every day. For example, the performance of artist Sela Suu during the first day was very beautiful. proof of rock bands The Belgian, although much smaller, is in any case of the second category. front man Tom Berman often jumps on the amplifiers to communicate with his audience while the other band members fuss with their instruments. Alan Gevaert’s performance is, as always, exceptional: there aren’t many bassists with his technical skills. Unfortunately, due to a coincidence with the dEUS concert, we were only able to follow the early part of Angel Olsen’s show. On the other hand we arrive just in time to admire the Queen of the Stone Age who immediately attacksEvergreen “No One Knows” and then unleashes seventy minutes of powerful alt-rock on an audience that is nothing but deadpan.
Naturally, the second evening also provided moments designed to please pop lovers. The numerous fans gathered at the Mumford & Sons concert must have been satisfied. The folk troupe certainly didn’t skimp on expenses to put up an impressive visual spectacle, including the final fireworks display. Sam Smith, on the other hand, looked unconvinced and looked a bit subdued. In a fairly long concert, with a full range of hits and famous covers (Madonna, Calvin Harris, Donna Summer), the English artist focuses heavily on choreography, which is often whimsical and flashy, but greatly limits the interaction with his audience, repeatedly asking everyone to make noise.
Midnight is also the time for the ultimate adrenaline rush with the fiery rock of the Black Keys. Dan Auerbach enters the stage in a flashy yellow shirt, with Carney on drums beside him and a trio of bearded musicians behind him. They immediately begin with two of their greatest classics, “I Got Mine” and “Gold on the Ceiling”. Apart from the usual ritual phrases, Orbach doesn’t talk much but still manages to warm the audience with the strumming of his guitar. There is also room for the recent “Wild Child” at the end of the concert, but the conclusion, as always, is assigned to the irresistible “Lonely Boy”, evoking the now inevitable wild dances from the audience.
Flea is in a complete state of grace, with his thumping bass lines and constant quest to grab the audience’s attention. In an evening full of craziness, he also sets out to sing a traditional Irish song in a mad voice as a singer. Anthony Kiedis appears more reclusive and a bit stoic this time around. The pectorals and abs are sculpted as ever, but it feels a bit loose in terms of patency. Fortunately, the Red Hot Chili Peppers can count on a repertoire capable of warming an audience from the very first chord, even if they don’t always decide to use it: there are several more recent songs in the lineup that have been warmly received by audiences. This is a recurring issue in this version which has been selected as main event Many artists who created great things more than twenty years ago.
Similar treatment is reserved for Liam Gallagher, for example, who sings his latest songs with complete indifference, while, in contrast, there is rapturous applause when he revisits memories with songs composed during Oasis’ time. The singer from Manchester, who is a self-proclaimed genius in the video introducing his shows, will try to tease Madrid’s audience not only with music but also with frequent references to his favorite team’s recent football victories.
In a review of the low presence of women on the main stages, one of the highlights was the MIA show in the late evening. Taking over the festivities from Janelle Monae, the British rapper puts on a fresh and catchy show. Backed by a hip-hop dance troupe and extraordinary choreography, the accomplished singer strikes a powerful connection with her audience, willingly mingling with the crowd or spreading an anti-war message. In the finale, she sings the timeless “Paper Plane” while wearing a dress made of dollars in a shower of colorful ribbons.

Even the next day it will be easy to meet hundreds of tourists in town or at the airport with festively distinctive (and practically indestructible) bracelets. On the other hand, it is an event that has sold nearly two lakh tickets in three days. Mind boggling numbers that are becoming a pleasant habit in the Iberian regions.
