According to the Medline Plus portal, respiratory syncytial virus is a common viral illness that causes mild cold-like symptoms; however, it can also cause severe lung infections, especially in infants, the elderly, and those with severe disease people.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says symptoms of the virus are:

These symptoms usually appear in stages rather than all at once. In young infants infected with RSV, the only symptoms may be fussiness, decreased activity, and difficulty breathing.

In most cases, medications are not needed to treat the disease, as most RSV infections clear up on their own within one to two weeks.

However, patients should be observed closely, monitored for fever and pain, and continued to drink fluids.
