Mark Hamill has never hosted SNL, and he thinks he knows why.

Mark Hamill has never hosted Saturday Night Live and the actor explained the reason behind that fact in a new interview. Hamill is best known for his role as Luke Skywalker in the long-running Star Wars saga, but he has also lent his voice to several animated series over the years, including Joker. The actor has worked steadily since the launch of A New Hope in 1977, but, unlike some of his Star Wars suitors, SNL creator Lorne Michaels never gave him a role as host on the show.

In a recent interview with Esquire, Hamill commented on his absence from SNL’s host roster. While he seems happy to continue enjoying the show as a fan, he has a theory as to why he was never asked. Here is Hamill’s full comment:

“Okay, I talk about SNL. Carrie (Fisher) did it back in the day with the original cast. I was very happy because it was my favorite show, Carrie was amazing and it really made me want to do it too. But this isn’t one of those things where your agent calls and says, “Hey, book my client.” Choose the one you want and go from there. I was asked to host Fridays, which was ABC’s answer to SNL. And I think – I’m not sure, again just guessing – but I think that may have been a factor in not being viewed favorably by Lorne Michaels. It’s one of those things where if they ask me, you do you. accept the challenge. But it’s okay they don’t ask, because I’m perfectly happy being in the audience and not having the pressure of being on live television like that.”

Given his past with comedy it’s certainly unsurprising that Hamill never hosted SNL, but he’s just one of many actors to have yet to land a role. While Fisher, who of course played Princess Leia, headlined SNL in 1978, fellow Star Wars costar Harrison Ford never did. This perhaps isn’t too surprising, given Ford’s public attitude.

Another famous actor Hamill’s age who has not yet hosted SNL is Denzel Washington. Washington stars Angelina Jolie, Keanu Reeves, Will Smith and Sandra Bullock. Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, despite appearing on the show in cameos, have yet to lead SNL. Others who didn’t attend include Bob Odenkirk, Sacha Baron Cohen, Mark Wahlberg, Julia Roberts, Chris Evans, and of course Tom Cruise.

It’s clear, then, that Hamill is far from the only famous actor who hasn’t been approached to lead SNL. While he is no longer starring in the Star Wars films, the actor is still active today and appears in a new comedy film called The Machine. It’s possible that Hamill will eventually host NBC’s long-running show, but if that doesn’t happen, it looks like he’s more than happy to enjoy the show from the wings.
