Metro Boomin’s ‘Creepin’ Almost Cut From ‘Heroes and Villains’ – Billboard

Metro Boomin’s “Creepin'” with The Weeknd and 21 Savage, a remake of Mario Winans’ 2004 R&B hit “I Don’t Wanna Know” featuring Diddy and Enya, was the biggest hit from the superproducer’s latest solo album. Heroes and villains. The song spent the entire first half of 2023 in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 3.

But getting the green light from those mentioned in “I Don’t Want to Know” turned out to be quite a feat, Metro reports. Billboard

“(Amir “Cash” Esmailian), one of my managers, (and I) were figuring out what songs Abel (Tesfaye) and I would write for Heroes. Cash mentioned, “Yo, just between you and me, (Abel) always wanted to do something with ‘I Don’t Wanna Know.’ One day I just pitched the idea to him and he was like, “Hell yeah! I wanted to do this! – recalls Metro. “We both fuck Mario hard; he served as my mentor. So he recorded backing vocals. And I’ve always thought about putting Savage in there because I know (he and Abel) have never had a song before and he’s as careless as Puff’s verses were back in the day.”

Diddy had no problem clearing out “I Don’t Wanna Know,” which samples Enya’s 1987 track “Boadicea,” but the Irish singer nailed it. She did not sign on to Metro’s original working title, which shortened the original hit to “IDWK”. “I tried to call it something else, but she was against it,” he says.

“This is one of the ones that almost didn’t make it, just because the cleanup process was so labor intensive,” adds Ryan Ramsey, another Metro manager.

Because he was getting too close to the album’s release date, Metro invited Enye to send a list of acceptable song titles that he could choose from. The list included “Hesitant,” “Creeping,” “Don’t Come Back to Me,” “It’s Better This Way,” and “I Want to Tell You.”

“Creepin” was exactly that. I was like, “Damn, why didn’t I think of that?” – says Metro. “It ended up being a blessing because it’s the best name for it.”
