Throughout his career on the hardwood, Michael Jordan was known as a fearless competitor. Whether he’s chasing a championship or just hanging out in the locker room, the NBA legend wants to win and won’t accept any defeat.
However, these standards don’t just apply to them and his team members. He also had the magnanimity to expect the best from those he had money with. Let former New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman explain.
From a distance, professional athletes look like larger-than-life superheroes. While it’s easy to think that attending an NFL game can take away that sense of awe, some names really pack a punch.
For Edelman, Jeter and Jordan are two of them.
“We’re playing in the 2014 Super Bowl,” the former Patriot recalled on his jersey. a named game podcast. “You know, you have Friday night off. Usually I take your family out the week before the Super Bowl. I take my family out to dinner. I go see them, and then I roll up and I see Derek Jeter and Michael Jordan. I was like a superstar.”
The wide receiver went on to explain that he approached “Mr. Jeter” and they had a brief conversation. Although the shortstop was “charming” and “enthusiastic,” Jordan kept his distance. Edelman remembers him as “a little cold.”
But his temper finally came close.
“The conversation was coming to an end, about five minutes later, and I was leaving and Jordan came up to me,” the caller added. “He said, ‘Hey, kid. I made a ton of money on you. Don’t screw it up.’ That was the only thing he said to me.”
While the interaction does sound jarring – Edelman remembers simply replying “Yes, sir, Mr. Jordan” because he didn’t know what else to say – it does fit with what we know about Jordan . In addition to his strong desire to win, the NBA star is no stranger to gambling. If there’s a chance to prove he’s the best, he’ll take it.
“I could stop gambling,” Jordan said in a 1993 interview with Connie Chung. last dance. “I have a competition issue, a competition issue.”
Weekly newspaper Jump Management was contacted via email to see if Jordan recalled Edelman’s version of events.
Without knowing exactly what Jordan was betting on, one thing is for sure, Edelman and the Patriots did their part.
The receiver had nine catches for 109 yards and a touchdown during Super Bowl 49 (which technically took place in 2015, but actually came at the end of the 2014 season) with the Patriots A 28-24 victory, thanks to the now-infamous late game call.
The Seahawks actually started out as favorites in the big game, but betting on the Patriots pushed things into a “tick,” according to CBS Sports. Even after Jordan placed his bets after bookmakers started favoring New England, Edelman and his teammates still covered the spread.
Of course, it’s also possible that he bet on the Patriots early in the season and only need New England to win the Super Bowl to cash in.
But regardless, Edelman seems to be doing his part. It’s not going to be easy when Michael Jordan, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady all want you to get the deal done.
