Michael Jordan’s 2002 All-Star Sneakers Re-Release

Most people remember the iconic red and black Jordan sneakers that Michael Jordan wore during his time with the Chicago Bulls, but few remember one of the most futuristic models he debuted in a Washington Wizards uniform. For the first time since 2003, Jordan Brand will release the infamous Air Jordan 17 “Lightning.” Check out our sneaker news for more upcoming releases and great content!

Michael Jordan started all 82 games for Washington in the 2002-03 season, which ended up being his final year in the NBA. That year, Jordan was selected as an All-Star and averaged 20 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game. It’s also one of the few times we see Michael Jordan and one of his greatest disciples, Kobe Bryant, together.

Last year, Michael Jordan was selected as an All-Star, and the GOAT appeared in the All-Star Weekend for the 13th time in his career. He appeared on the court wearing his latest signature shoe, the Air Jordan 17. This is the most futuristic Air Jordan model yet and they are returning for the first time.

Air Jordan 17 “Lightning”

The Air Jordan 17 was a shoe that was so far ahead of its time in sneakers that it looked otherworldly even by today’s standards. In fact, when we look at some of the basketball shoes on the market today, it’s clear that they draw inspiration directly from the Jordan 17 silhouette. The shoe features thick leather sidewalls with perforations on the sides. The midsole and outsole feature translucent yellow rubber that extends to the sole, echoing the “Lightning” theme.

The Jordan 17 was one of the first basketball shoes at the time to feature a neoprene inner bootie, which was specifically designed to fit the wearer’s foot. The tongue, laces and insole are all black, with a chrome Jumpman logo on the heel. The signature detail here is the metallic blue heel plate, finishing it all off in true Wizards style.

The Air Jordan 17 “Lightning” is expected to release on May 30, 2024, and will be available via Jordan Brand retailers and the Nike SNKRS app. Priced at a whopping $300, it’s one of the most expensive retail Air Jordans we’ve ever seen.
