Six pairs of sneakers worn by Michael Jordan during his six NBA championships have sold for a record-breaking $8 million at auction in New York.
“The Dynasty Collection” consists of six individual Air Jordan sneakers. Jordan wore these shoes during key games in his NBA Finals victory.
The shoes set a new world record for game-worn sneakers when they were sold to a buyer in a Sotheby’s auction room on Friday.
They also become the second most valuable piece of Jordan memorabilia in history.
The jersey worn by the 60-year-old in Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals (the famous “Last Dance” season) still holds the record for most game-worn sports memorabilia of all time.
The shoe was sold at Sotheby’s in September 2022 for $10.1 million. A year later, in April 2023, the Air Jordan 13 worn by Jordan in Game 2 of the same NBA Finals sold at auction for $2.2 million.
The basketball icon won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls from 1991 to 1998.
He became one of the most famous athletes in the world, and his partnership with Nike created one of the most recognizable brands in sports – one that lasted long after Jordan’s NBA career ended.
The $8 million auction was hailed as “another reminder of Michael Jordan’s lasting impact.”
“Today’s record-breaking price is testament to the GOAT. There is no denying that the Dynasty Collection ranks among the most important collections of sports memorabilia in history,” said Brahm Wachter of Sotheby’s.
“(This is) a truly unparalleled moment and milestone in auction history, and the sale of these six championship-winning sneakers may never be replicated.”
