The film “Ferrari” takes place in the summer of 1957. Enzo Ferrari (Driver), his marriage to Laura (Cruz) and the treacherous Mille Miglia race across Italy. To portray the man and his car empire, Mann and Driver had to explore “Enzo’s office, which has remained untouched since he died… It’s understanding the culture he’s in and getting almost tactile information from all the objects, everything that surrounds us.” They also explored the racing mindset and how it reflects the fundamental human condition: “We try to go faster, further, achieve more, go to the moon. Driver described “information overload” when it came to researching Enzo, but you “take what applies to you and makes sense in the script.” The most important thing was to capture his “inner life… His brother died and his father died. Being single, having to forge his own path and be the catalyst for how he lived the rest of his life was an internal thing that we talked about all the time. We also talked a lot about the mentality of the driver, which is what we did when racing Ferrari.” He realized that such thinking was “short-sighted, long-term focus… calm on the surface and furious swimming within.”

For Cruise, it was “very important to spend that time…sometimes alone, investigating, to get closer and really understand who this creature is. When you play a real person, there is an added responsibility. The world knew little about Laura Ferrari, but I was very lucky that Michael introduced me to a lot of people who really knew her and really knew Enzo.” They visited Ferrari’s house, which had “many atmospheric details that explained the deep depression she was in after the loss of (her son) Dino.” She and Enzo stayed together because they had “true love” for each other, “not an easy love, not an easy one, but I think they both had a lot of respect for each other, and he also respected what she did for the company.” »
