Minari, with the Brad Pitt touch

What began as a purely personal project, in which director Lee Isaac Chung sought to pay tribute to his origins, turned into a film that caused the interest of Brad Pitt, one of the producers of the story, and that of the Overnight it became a film applauded by critics, which will compete this Sunday for six Oscars and which will hit the national billboard this Thursday under the name of Minari.

When I decided to make this film, I thought of my father, in his search when he came to the United States in search of a better life, in the search made by many immigrants, many farmers. This speaks of something human and universal. I think this was the core of what I was hoping to do with this film, looking for the human and the connections in that sense, trying to understand what it is that makes us human, ”said Lee Isaac Chung.

It was through his production house Plan B, which was born in 2001 with his ex-partner Jennifer Aniston, that Brad Pitt produced Minari, a film that at the 2020 edition of the Sundance Film Festival won both the Jury Prize and the Public Urge.

The good relationship that emerged between Pitt and Chung from working on Minari made both repeat the formula in a new film, now about love, which is in development and which will tell the story of a New York man who finds love with a Hong Kong woman who loses for fear of settling down.

Brad believes in the lifespan of movies. He doesn’t believe in the notion that a movie must have a successful opening weekend for it to work. He reminds us all the time that the movies we discovered long after their initial release and believes that we should tell stories that we feel we would die if we didn’t make them, ”said Jeremy Kleiner, partner at Brad Pitt and co-president of the Plan B.

Minari, a word that refers to an Asian plant that dies after a year of existence, but is reborn with more force, was filmed for 25 days in Oklahoma with Alan S. Kim, Yeri Han, Noel Cho, Steven Yeun among its cast. and Yuh-Jung Youn, these last two actors nominated for the category of Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, and who play the patriarch and the grandmother of the family who move to a rural area of the United States to seek the call American dream, just as it happened with the director’s family in the 1980s.

Yuh-Jung is an amazing actress. From the beginning, in her first movie, she changed the rules of what it means to be a Korean actress. She is a special force and we needed that force that did not fit into any category of what it means to be a grandmother, what it means to be a Korean, what it means to be an immigrant, “the 42-year-old director complemented.

Regarding the work of Steven Yeun, a 37-year-old Korean actor who was seen on The Walking Dead, the director said that there was a great understanding with his protagonist.

From the beginning of our conversation, Steven had a very deep understanding of who Jacob (his character) was. I took the time to rewrite the script with Steven in my head and his ideas. We knew we were on the same page from the beginning and by the time we started production, he had become Jacob, “explained the director of Lucky Life.

Minari chooses six golden statuettes, and in addition to the acting medals, he adds the one for Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Original Music.
