Minsa announces vaccination campaign against 17 diseases

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) will start the second national vaccination campaign in 2023 to protect against at least 17 diseases.

Through this program, the national vaccination program for children and adults will be completed against severe tuberculosis, polio, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B, viral meningitis, bacterial meningitis, viral pneumonia, bacterial pneumonia, bacterial otitis media, severe diarrhea caused by rotavirus, measles, rubella, mumps, influenza and Covid-19.

According to the official statement, the event will be held from November 27 to December 22, 2023, with Saturday, December 16, 2023, and Sunday, December 17, 2023 as the center days.

Pets included in plan

Even Nicaraguans’ pets will be part of the program, as 100,000 rescue dogs will be vaccinated against rabies.

“Similarly, we will complete the first dose of human papillomavirus vaccine for girls aged 10 to 14 years. A total of 425,831 doses of vaccine have been administered,” the statement said.

Public health expert Dr. Alejandro Lagos said the incidence of most diseases that require vaccination is high in the last month of the year, so now is the best time to launch the campaign.

“It also protects us from diarrheal diseases, and let’s remember we’re in the rainy season and these rotaviruses are very frequent, so what better way than to get vaccinated?” he said.

Lagos said the acute respiratory disease reaches a stage where it can lead to pulmonary fibrosis and patients will develop chronic diseases in the future.

“It makes you a person who needs oxygen for a period of time and we have to remember that sometimes when there is a lack of oxygen, you have respiratory failure and very low oxygen saturation, the requirement is about 300 liters an hour and that comes at a cost ,” he added…

Reduce disease

General practitioner Dr. Jorge Manzanares explained that the campaign will help reduce the incidence of these diseases and transcend the severe stages of the disease.

“With these diseases, our immune systems may be suppressed and have lower defenses, and this is the opportunity that more deadly diseases like Covid-19 take advantage of to undermine them,” he asserted.

Doctors say diseases such as meningitis and tuberculosis can affect childhood.
