More children with diarrhea and fever in Guayaquil due to increase in gastrointestinal infections | Community | Guayaquil

Juan and Dario, brothers aged 6 and 8, were taken to the hospital to stay hydrated after suffering fever, diarrhea and vomiting for 12 hours. Their grandmother, Mirella García, commented that the minors began to feel severe pains in their stomachs, so they suspected that they had eaten something at school that had harmed them.

She took them to the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) pharmacy on Francisco Segura and Quito avenues in southern Guayaquil, just a few blocks from her home, where she was diagnosed with Gastroenteritis.

“We anticipate possible health impacts at our facilities, which makes us better prepared,” José Ruales said of El Niño.

Concerns about these stomach infection cases increased in Guayaquil during the week from Thursday, September 14 to Thursday, September 21.

This was confirmed by Dr. Juan Carlos González, Director of Health and Hygiene of the City of Guayaquil. That week, he explained, the Civic Center received more minors with gastrointestinal symptoms and infections leading to diarrhea, vomiting and discomfort.

Experts pointed out that after care and examination, it was determined that they were rotavirus, enterovirus, adenovirus, salmonellosis, and even COVID-19.

According to nursing data, in the city of Guayaquil, more than 22 confirmed cases of gastrointestinal diseases are registered every day in each health center and hospital of the municipal network. So far this year, 3,465 cases of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis have been diagnosed.

Doctors advise: “When a child develops diarrhea and then vomits, he or she should be taken to a medical facility to receive intravenous fluids to control dehydration.”

He added that at the pediatric ward of the center’s Bicentenario hospital, children are kept for 12 to 24 hours, depending on medical records, to allow them to regain fluids.

Pediatrician Vladimir Vélez said that on a private level, these services have also increased significantly. Where previously he would receive one email a day in his office at Kennedy, he now receives five emails a day with these characteristics.

The two doctors explained that this increase is due to water pollution, food damage due to climate, high humidity decomposing and contaminated food.
