#Morelia | No human cases of avian influenza in Michoacán: SSM
– The outbreak does not pose a health risk
Morelia, Michoacan, March 28, 2024. – In light of the detection of an H5 avian influenza outbreak in some of the entity’s food birds, the Michoacán State Department of Health (SSM) reports that these birds were backyard birds found in the entity on March 11. In coordination with the National Service for Agricultural Food Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica), the products were slaughtered and were not transmitted to the population.
Both agencies have measures in place to prevent the spread of the virus, and given that the outbreak occurred in a remote and inaccessible area, it does not pose an animal health risk.
Although the virus poses no risk to human health, because the virus is unique to birds, it comes from
SSM conducted a review of the area for possible cases of human infection.
Workers and personnel who may have come into contact with the blood, feces and secretions of sick birds, as well as surfaces and objects contaminated with the virus, were monitored.
SSM personnel remain vigilant with medical units, but given that the case was registered on March 11, the incubation period is 5 days, and the risk of infection is zero, there is no risk in consuming chicken and eggs.
