Movie Review of Jean Du Barry – The King’s Favorite with Johnny Depp

After being presented at the last Cannes Film Festival – where it was selected as the opening film – Jean Du Barry – Favorite of the King Next will arrive in Italian cinemas from August 30 with Notorious Pictures. However, although the director’s intentions are commendable, his Jeanne du Barry fails to portray a strong portrait of a revolutionary woman: in the end, despite her libertinism and her quirks, Jeanne becomes a kind of angel-woman, loved by everyone, good-natured and open-minded, who lives only on love for her king. What is missing is the more materialistic and manipulative side of this historical figure: Jeanne was a woman of her time and so knew she needed a man. The film works in some cases, but leaves much to be desired in others.
