Mowalola sparks controversy after using Saudi flag print on miniskirt

There is a lot to be said about Mowalola, the Nigerian designer who, in recent days at London Fashion Week, presented her new spring-summer 2024 collection on the show. A show that did not go unnoticed, especially thanks to the presence of Kanye. West and Bianca Censori, who, thanks to their brazen appearance and “confrontation with public decency,” have overnight become the most controversial celebrities of recent months. It would seem appropriate to say that everything Kanye touches becomes the subject of controversy. And now Mowalola is also in the eye of the storm, having already attracted the attention of the Internet a few months ago with a revealing outfit made for Bianca Censori and consisting of a few simple squares of fabric.

Mowalola once again demonstrated his provocative stylistic approach in the spring-summer 2024 collection, which included a micro-skirt printed with the Saudi Arabian flag among deconstructed jeans and printed slip dresses. While the garment was part of a wider range of miniskirts featuring prints and motifs of flags from around the world, the inclusion of Saudi Arabia was a choice that sparked controversy among many users, who voiced their displeasure on X (formerly Twitter). According to the Network, a miniskirt with the Saudi flag would be “offensive” and “disrespectful” to Islamic culture and religion.

“Apologize to Saudi Arabia and remove the design,” a user tweeted, questioning the designer, who in turn responded by stating that “a miniskirt as an act of war in 2023 is very dystopian.” In addition to the miniskirt, the collection also included T-shirts with the print “The Crowning of Jesus with Thorns”: “It’s not about the skirt. You are insulting an entire religion by using religious words as a design on your skirt. Be a little ashamed and admit your guilt,” another user wrote and tried to remove the design from the collection.
