this is a superbly made film with a group of actors who work to perfection. Some directorial decisions (don’t forget that this is Tom George’s debut in the world of feature films) are taken to the extreme. Interesting are the reconstructions of some real characters, for example, Agatha Christie herself or the actor Richard Attenborough, inserted into the context of a completely invented plot.
Thus, the film is fictional, but in fact its script is based on a play, referencing the novel by a British writer. Mousetrap. As events unfold, the line between reality and literary fantasy merges, and a playful interplay of references is created between the play and the fictional cinematic plot, in a work that perfectly balances literature, theater and film.
The film opens with the murder of eccentric American director Leo Koepernick (a wonderful Adrien Brody), whose voiceover introduces the viewer to the complex world of the film and almost like Robert De Niro in Casino Scorsese soon dies. The investigation is carried out by a peculiar pair: on the one hand, a somewhat stereotypical character, Sam Rockwell’s Inspector Stoppard, rumpled, addicted to alcohol and with a dramatic history behind him, on the other, a young and talkative young woman new to the police force, played by Saoirse Ronan. And it is “Agent Stalker” that perhaps represents the real strength of the film, with its clumsy jokes and its inexperience it captures the viewer and draws him into the story, essentially read through his eyes. A well-written and well-acted role is simply adapted to its interpreter and gives Murder in the West End the right energy.”
