Dicks: The Musical Director Larry Charles reveals why he avoids big-budget blockbusters.
On Thursday in the program WTF with Marc Maron podcast, Borate The director, who prefers to put his energy into indie films and TV shows, criticized the current Hollywood system.
“I try to do things like Dangerous comedy or this movie(Dicks: The Musical) — this film is very low-budget,” Charles said. “I find it politically and ethically offensive that movies cost $250 million and the world is in the state it is in. So I also want to make a statement about how these things are made.”
Charles has seen comedy and media travel around the world during his travels through the four-part Netflix docuseries. The Dangerous World of Comedy by Larry CharlesThat’s why he is particularly critical of what he called the “media monopoly system” in the United States.
“Kind of like an authoritarian big brother thing that we… they’ve learned over the years, they don’t need to force you, they don’t need to scare you, they need to seduce you,” said Seinfeld said the producer. “So we’re all seduced by great TV shows and great movies, and we get distracted by those things, and then we give ourselves over to the same capitalist system, and there’s no way for it to change while we’re doing it. … I’m struggling with this.”
