Dr. Marco Vinicio Jimenez Gonzalez de la Llave, head of the health welfare department of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Baja California Sur, explained that exposure to dust and rain is a determining factor in the increase in conjunctivitis cases.

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the membrane covering the eye. This damage can occur due to changes in temperature and sunlight intensity, and is more likely to occur during heat, rainy seasons and the dust produced.

There are several types of conjunctivitis, including allergic conjunctivitis, which occurs suddenly due to exposure to a substance that causes a transient reaction, whether it’s dust, pollen, animal hair, cosmetics, etc., the health welfare chief reported. In this type of conjunctivitis, swelling and redness of the eyelids occur; the discomfort may be temporary and usually does not require treatment.

Viral conjunctivitis, on the other hand, is caused by visiting contaminated spaces such as spas, beaches, or schools. This type can cause symptoms such as tearing, burning, sandy sensations, and red eyes, so you need to go to the hospital for examination and treatment.

Another type of conjunctivitis is bacterial conjunctivitis, which is accompanied by heavy yellow or green discharge in addition to burning and itching. This condition is common in children, who often wake up with sticky, weed-filled eyes. Cleaning with clean drinking water and evaluation by a doctor are critical in determining whether antibiotic-based treatment is needed.

Specialists urge beneficiaries to visit their family doctors if they have any of these problems as vision health is fragile and must be treated promptly to avoid complications.
