Joaquin Phoenix to play French emperor in director’s biopic ‘Gladiator’

It is from the first trailer that the countdown to “Napoleon“, a biographical film dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte. It will be released in theaters in the United States on November 22 and will then be distributed via streaming on Apple TV+ – and this is a new job Ridley Scott whom he chose for the role of the protagonist Joaquin Phoenix.
It’s sort of a reunion with the director’s other blockbuster: Gladiator (2000), in which the actor played Emperor Commodus. Twenty-three years later, with the Gladiator sequel project in full swing, Ridley Scott is back to direct the Oscar-winning Joker actor as yet another emperor.
Written by David Scarpa, who previously collaborated with Scott on All the Money in the World and also wrote the script for the sequel to Gladiator, the film offers an original look at Napoleon’s origins and his rapid rise to emperor, highlighting the commander’s relentless ambition and astounding strategic mind and founder of the First French Empire.
The key to reading will also be personal because the story will be built on his often volatile relationship with his wife Giuseppina, his one true love. There will be breathtaking action scenes, as seen in the trailer, which summarizes the protagonist’s story: “He came out of nowhere. He conquered everything.”
