September 9 is National African Immigrant and Refugee HIV and Hepatitis Awareness Day. Since 2014, National African Immigrant and Refugee HIV and Hepatitis Awareness Day (NAIRHHA), founded by advocates in Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., and New York, has been observed annually on September 9 by communities, advocates, health care professionals, government Memorials to officials and other stakeholders. The purpose of NAIRHHA Day is to bring national and local attention to the HIV and viral hepatitis needs of African immigrants living in the United States in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner. By raising awareness, education and resources to address some of the unique issues faced by African immigrants in the United States, NAIRHHA Day will help eliminate the prevalent stigma surrounding HIV and hepatitis in these communities and empower communities to take charge of their own health, how YES: Encourage screening, treatment, and hepatitis B vaccination.
