Amid news that Netflix will be mailing its latest disc in a red envelope this week, the streamer has unveiled its most popular DVD ever – and it turns out the film has been the subject of controversy as of late.
While most subscribers have migrated to Netflix’s digital platform, more than a million people still use the classic DVD service – where it all started for the streaming giant.
But after more than 25 years, the company decided to end DVD mail-in subscriptions. This Friday, Netflix will officially release its latest red envelope, marking the end of an era that paved the way for the way we consume entertainment at home.

In light of this news, Netflix has released a list of the 100 best-selling DVDs of all time, with the controversial film taking the top spot.

The most popular movie of all time on Netflix’s DVD service is the 2009 sports drama The Blind Side, the purported true story of Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron), a homeless black teenager adopted by a wealthy white couple named Leigh Anne (Sandra Bullock). ) and Sean Tuohy (Tim McGraw), which allowed him to fulfill his dream of playing for the NFL.

While for years many viewers believed it was the poignant story of the heroic family who took Oher under their wing and helped turn his life around to become a professional footballer, it all fell apart in August.
The retired NFL star has filed a lawsuit against the Tuohy family, saying their adoption story is a lie and accusing them of deceiving him into gaining custody, allowing them to control his finances and make lucrative business deals on his behalf.

He claims the couple made “millions” of dollars using his name after the 2009 film’s release. In the current case, the Tuohys deny the allegations, but admitted in a court document seen by People that they described Oher as their son “in a colloquial sense” and that there was “never any intention of adopting him.”

Oher has asked the Tennessee court to end the conservatorship, which Tuohy’s lawyer says they plan to do. He also demanded a “full accounting” of all money received in Oher’s name and history.

Even before the lawsuit, “The Blind Side” faced controversy, with critics arguing that it perpetuated a “white savior” narrative. Oher made it clear that he was never a fan of the film long before he filed the lawsuit.
Despite these problems, the 2009 film is Netflix’s best-selling DVD. But as Collider points out, it was released at a time when the company’s DVD rental service was at the height of its popularity.
