What are you going to watch this week? This week we’ve rounded up everything coming to streaming services including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Apple TV+, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.
Chemistry Lessons is an incredibly popular 2022 book about Elisabeth Zott, an unflappable chemist who resists the patriarchal norms of the world around her. After being rejected from lab work, she creates a TV show about the chemistry of cooking. The book had all the ingredients (ha ha, get it?) of a bestseller: clear writing, outspoken feminism, lots of quirky capital-C characters (including a troublesome dog). Will a TV show starring Brie Larson as Elizabeth have the same exciting alchemy? / Shanti Mathias
Between 1992 and 1997, R. L. Stine published more than 60 Goosebumps novels, about one per month. Even the guy from Captain Underpants or the guy from Treehouse can’t compare to this. Kids today probably don’t know that Goosebumps was once a book series, but they may be familiar with it as a Hollywood intellectual property that gets remade every few years. The latest series is directed by the same guy who directed the 2015 film version, and takes the franchise in a darker, more teen direction, more “inspired by” than “based on” the source material. / Calum Henderson
In this spy thriller, Joe (Zoe Saldana), a CIA field officer assigned to the Lioness program, tries to balance her personal and professional life while fighting the war on terrorism. She recruits Cruz (Leisla De Oliveira) to go undercover with her to befriend the daughter of a terrorist financier on the CIA hit list. Forward Nicole Kidman also stars in this Taylor Sheridan Yellowstone spy thriller. / Sam Brooks
Mike Flanagan has helmed an impeccable run of Netflix horror greats (The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass and The Midnight Club) and rounds out the quintalogy with a loose adaptation of the Edgar Allan Poe story of the same name. Name. This adaptation seems pretty loose – focusing on a corrupt pharmaceutical company CEO who is forced to confront his actions when his children start dying in cruel and mysterious ways. Bruce Greenwood plays the CEO, who is supported by Carla Gugino, Mary McDonnell and Carl Lumbly. / SB
The biggest news I’ve heard about this reboot is that, oh, Frasier is wearing jeans! In this series, Fraser (Kelsey Grammar, of course) returns to his hometown of Boston for the “third act” of his life. However, it doesn’t see nearly all of Frasier’s original cast returning, which might leave you wondering why it’s even done. But hey, if what you want in 2023 is a continuation of a sitcom that ended two decades ago, here’s Frasier. / SB
Exactly what we need: a documentary about vaping! Director R.J. Cutler (Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry and Belushi) talks about how this e-cigarette startup grew into a multibillion-dollar company before Covid-19 cut its ambitions off at its knees. He also promises to talk about the history of vaping in general, how Yule’s original goals were to destroy Big Tobacco, but he ended up being consumed by the beast. / SB
If you liked Guardians of the Galaxy, you’ll love Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves – it’s cut from the same cloth as the Marvel franchise, albeit in a medieval fantasy setting. Both have great tunes, stellar casts, and combine comedy and fantasy in an easy to watch and enjoyable package. The multi-layered humor makes this movie perfect for watching with kids and for having a good laugh at jokes that kids don’t understand. I expected the D&D movie to suck, but it pleasantly surprised me – maybe it will do the same to you!/ Tommy de Silva
In this wildly unlikely film, a thief realizes he can make more money through photojournalism than through petty crime. Fantasy, am I right? In all seriousness, this harrowing film directed by Dan Gilroy and starring two exceptional actors in Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo is a grim indictment of the state of modern journalism and the now seemingly inextricable link between news and consumer demand. / SB
Based on a 1999 New Yorker article of the same name, The Burial is the suit of financially troubled funeral home owner Jeremy Joseph O’Keefe (a classically irascible Tommy Lee Jones) against the Loewen funeral company, headed by unconventional personal injury lawyer Willie. E. Gary (Jamie Foxx), which ended with a crazy $500 million jury verdict. A good legal drama never goes to waste, and this one feels especially wacky. / SB
