Morelia, Michigan, March 28, 2024. – In light of the detection of an H5 avian influenza outbreak in some of the entity’s food birds, the Michoacán State Department of Health (SSM) reports that these were backyard birds discovered on March 11, in conjunction with the State Agricultural Food Health, Safety and Coordinated by the Quality Service (Senasica), these products have been slaughtered and have not been transmitted to the public.
In a statement, the two agencies reportedly took measures to prevent the spread of the virus and did not pose an animal health risk given that the outbreak occurred in a remote and inaccessible area.
Although the virus poses no threat to human health, since the virus is unique to birds, SSM personnel checked the area for possible cases of human transmission.
Workers and personnel who may have come into contact with the blood, feces and secretions of sick birds, as well as surfaces and objects contaminated with the virus, were monitored.
SSM personnel remain vigilant with medical units, but given that the case was registered on March 11, the incubation period is 5 days, and the risk of infection is zero, there is no risk in consuming chicken and eggs.
