★★★★☆ “No One Can Save You” (12A) revolves around Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever), a young seamstress who lives alone and is ostracized by the small town of Mill River, where she is considered a “freak.”
It’s a bleak existence, then, but life is about to get a lot more complicated: when Brynn suffers a home invasion by an alien and somehow manages to take on her attacker herself, she personally incurs the wrath of the entire alien invasion.
Written and directed by Brian Duffield, Nobody’s Gonna Save You sounds ridiculous on paper and feels every bit as ridiculous as it did in its early stages.
But as we learn more about Brynn and especially the guilt she feels over the death of her childhood friend, Maude (Evangeline Rose), the story gradually begins to peel back the sci-fi clichés to reveal something fascinating lurking below the surface.
Brian Duffield doesn’t make it easy for Kaitlyn Dever – the film is essentially a one-woman show, and she has about three short lines of dialogue throughout – but Dever deserves full credit for embodying the emotional roller coaster of a woman going through an experience. what she instinctively understands is not real, but who is nevertheless obliged to live her horrifying truth.
