RALEIGH — Respiratory infections and deaths from the flu have been on the rise in recent weeks.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), the volume of respiratory illness consultations in hospital emergency rooms increased over the week.
According to their data, there was also an increase in admissions of patients with respiratory illnesses during the week of December 30 to January 5.
During this period, they recorded 1,055 hospital admissions with flu patients, but a week ago they recorded only 722 admissions.
The death toll from this disease also continues to increase, with a total of 52 deaths so far, including 47 adults and 5 children.
In terms of Covid-19, 923 people were hospitalized in the first week of the year, compared with 710 the week before.
Faced with this increase in infections, health authorities are asking people to seek primary medical care rather than going to emergency rooms.
“People with mild symptoms should seek testing and treatment from their regular health care provider or a telemedicine provider,” NCDHHS said.
Dr. Elizabeth Cuervo-Tilson, state health director and NCDHHS medical director, said we are approaching the winter peak of infections.
As a result, he asked people to get tested and “seek treatment as soon as they start experiencing symptoms” but avoid going to the emergency room.
“Treatment can help prevent serious illness, especially for people who are at high risk of complications due to age or health conditions,” he added.
In addition, they are asking the community to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and influenza, as this can also protect people from serious complications.
Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are available at pharmacies and private clinics.
as well as some federally qualified health care centers and local health departments, NCDHHS explained in a statement.
To avoid an increase in infections, health authorities have issued a series of healthcare recommendations.
