The Asan Institute for Policy Studies, based in South Korea, and the RAND Corporation, based in the United States. The strategic non-profit organizations published a joint report entitled “Options for Strengthening the Nuclear Assurance of the Republic of South Korea.”
The report stated that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un “plans to form a force consisting of at least 300 to 500 nuclear weapons, which is possible by 2030,” and noted that this situation “may pose a threat” to South Korea and the United States.
The report said North Korea hopes to “use its nuclear weapons to obstruct U.S. cooperation with South Korea and threaten the United States” and “rule without invading” South Korea.
The report notes that some or all of U.S. ballistic missile submarines in the Pacific should be “dedicated to targeting North Korea,” and among options to strengthen South Korea’s nuclear safeguards is “an average of 100 U.S. tactical nuclear weapons that the United States could possess.” Dismantling plans will be transferred to South Korea.” “Update for support” is also included.
