World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) reports first outbreak of season Avian Influenza Highly pathogenic H5N1 emerges on farm in northwest state Sonora, Mexico. Of the total 90,000 laying hens, 15,000 were confirmed dead, leading to the culling of the remaining flocks. The outbreak comes after Mexico recently declared it had eliminated the disease and imposed quarantines to prevent the spread of the virus, which, while not posing a danger to humans through the consumption of meat or eggs, does pose a risk to the country’s poultry operations.
Faced with the detection of the H5N1 virus, the Mexican government also reported disinfection activities at another nearby farm, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. Mexico, one of the world’s largest chicken producers, is facing concerns about a highly contagious virus that has wreaked havoc on global chicken flocks in previous years, prompting local authorities to tighten biosecurity measures, reports Any observed anomalies.
This poultry emergency occurred despite precautionary measures, such as an extensive H5N1 vaccination campaign last year in high-risk areas. Currently, tests are ongoing to determine the effectiveness of the vaccines used and to raise the possibility of new vaccination strategies against viral threats in the poultry industry.
