From the moment her older sister introduced her to Edward Scissorhandssinger-songwriter O Land felt a kinship with the main character (Johnny Depp) and his lover Kim (Winona Ryder). As a teenager trying to make sense of the world, she felt connected to both the isolation and awkwardness that radiated from Edward and the romance and whimsy that shone from Kim.
In this issue Spark Parade, O Land reveals why the film affected her so deeply at a young age and why it continues to resonate with her to this day. According to the Danish musician, this lasting impression is largely due to Danny Elfman’s wonderful score.
“I was so excited to find a partnership with film and music that really takes it to the next level,” she explains. “Especially Dancing on Ice, where he makes this ice figure, and the flakes from it cutting through the ice become the snow in which Winona Ryder dances. As for me, I don’t know who I was in love with: Winona Ryder or Edward Scissorhands. It was a perfect (wonderful) moment.”
