Aldo says he is full of aches and pains and leaves all household chores to his wife Carmen, but does not give her attention where it matters. Eldest son Salvo is on “probation” after stealing a scooter, and two twins, Ilari and Melissa, complete the bustling family tribe. Giovanni inherited a shoe store from his father, which has already lived its life, as his pragmatic wife Paola and equally pragmatic daughter Alessia note. Giacomo is a dentist who thinks only about work, while his wife Barbara chain-smokes and isolates herself from the world, and his stepson Ludovico is in the midst of pre-teen rebellion. Due to a booking error, three families end up sharing a house by the sea and discover their emotional, if not entirely elective, intimacy because “the island is beautiful, the house is big, and the summer is short.”
