January 1895, a few months before the Lumiere brothers gave birth to what we usually call cinema, in the courtyard of the Military School in Paris, Georges Piccard, an officer in the French army, witnesses the public condemnation and humiliation inflicted on Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish captain , accused of being an informant for German enemies. Disgrace follows exile, and the verdict sentences the traitor to imprisonment on Devil’s Island in French Guiana. A remote atoll where Dreyfus soothes longing and loneliness by writing heartfelt letters to his distant wife. Apparently, the case is closed. Picard is promoted to head of the statistics department, the same military counterintelligence unit that made the allegations against Dreyfus. And then he realizes that the transfer of information to the enemy has not yet been stopped.
