Ondine Biomedical’s Photodisinfection Recommended as Standard of Care

Peer-reviewed publication involving 13,493 patients reports consistent 66.5% reduction in spinal surgery infection rates over 8 years using Steriwave® nasal disinfection

VANCOUVER, British Columbia–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Canadian life sciences company Ondine Biomedical Inc. reports that an independent peer-reviewed research paper, “Prophylactic intranasal photodynamic antiseptic therapy and chlorhexidine gluconate wipes, “Effectiveness of Surgical Site Infections” from Vancouver General Hospital (“VGH”) in Adult Spine Surgery has been published in the Canadian Journal of Surgery. The study lasted eight years and involved 13,493 patients, 8823 of whom received Steriwave®. The paper concluded that nasal disinfection should become the standard of care for all patients undergoing emergency or elective spinal surgery.

The eight-year study showed a 66.5% reduction (7.98% vs 2.67%, p

The study was conducted by the Vancouver General Hospital spine team, led by Professor John Street. Professor Street is the Director of the Comprehensive Outpatient Spine Program at VGH, one of Canada’s largest referral centers for complex spinal trauma and spinal disease cases. Professor Street is the founder of the SAVES quality improvement program (Spine Adverse Event System). The SAVES program has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and has received numerous national and international awards.

The study’s authors concluded:

“Preoperative bundling of nPDT-CHG is a clinically effective strategy to reduce the incidence of SSI after emergency or elective spine surgery. It is an affordable intervention and may provide an important benefit for every SSI prevented in high-risk populations. Significant institutional cost savings. Given its rapid action, minimal risk of antimicrobial resistance, broad spectrum activity, and high compliance rates, preoperative bundled nPDT-CHG decolonization should become the standard of care for all patients undergoing emergency or elective spine surgery.”

Ondine Biomedical CEO Carolyn Cross said:

“With this simple, 5-minute, painless intervention, our Steriwave treatment has a life-saving effect – in this case, 468 spine surgery patients were saved from potentially fatal infections – enough to fit a 747 aircraft. We Sincere thanks to Professor Street and researchers at VGH for their pursuit of better patient outcomes. Postoperative spinal infection can be a devastating and expensive complication after spinal surgery, with patients facing chronic pain, paralysis, return to the operating room, long-term High risk of poor outcomes or even death. This study conclusively demonstrates that Steriwave is setting a new standard for infection control safety and performance.”
