“Oppenheimer” and Christopher Nolan’s artistic choice

Oppenheimer is definitely one of the most anticipated and talked about films of summer 2023. Ranging from director Christopher Nolan to an all-star cast that includes many well-known faces such as Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt. and Rami Malek.

he focused on some of the criticisms of his work, namely that it was difficult for some to listen to the dialogue at some points in the film. Some users also openly criticized the sound design and excessive volume of the soundtrack.

The director himself wanted to clarify this issue, explaining that this is a purely artistic choice. In an interview given Insiders he also explained that he refuses to record dialogue in post-production:

“I like to use a performance that was done at the time rather than recording the actor’s voice later. It’s an artistic choice that some people disagree with, and they have a right to.”

The director also has to deal with the decision to use format cameras IMAX extension which are quite noisy. To justify this choice, he decided to focus on the merits of these shots:

“There are some mechanical improvements. IMAX is also currently building new cameras that will be even quieter. A real breakthrough was the software technology that allows you to filter out camera noise. Over the 15 years of using this technology, it has improved a lot, and now it allows you to shoot more intimate scenes that were previously impossible to do.”
