Voting for candidates Oscar 2024 will be held from January 11 to 16 next year, with an official announcement on January 23. The 96th Academy Awards will take place on March 10, 2024. Currently, the initial favorite is Dune: Part Two (Warner Bros.), the Oscar-winning visual effects sequel. It has huge advantages in design and technology of the English company DNEG (Double Negative). Compared to the first film, the visuals span a much wider range.
Its strongest competition in the first half of the year comes from Oppenheimer (Universal), Indiana Jones and the Doom Quadrant (Lucasfilm/Disney), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (Marvel/Disney) and The Little Mermaid (Disney). Meanwhile, other contenders include Wonka (Warner Bros.), Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (Paramount), Mission: Impossible – Death Worth Part One (Paramount), Barbie (Warner Bros.), Blue Beetle (DC/Warner Bros.. ), John Wick 4 (Lionsgate), The Creator (20th Century Studios), Napoleon (Apple) and Poor Girls (Searchlight Pictures).
Two great films compete for best visual effects at the 2024 Oscars.
In Dune: Part Two, Denis Villeneuve’s Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides to fulfill his messianic destiny by leading the nomadic Fremen of Arrakis to war. According to the trailer, the second part contains large-scale explosive battle scenes, both on the ground and in the air, with ornithopter dragonflies flying. There’s also always Paul fighting Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, a psychotic bald sword-wielding assassin. In other episodes, the protagonist rides a sandworm and witnesses a huge explosion.

Therefore, we can expect a more complex work of DNEGI. This includes innovative sandscreens for inset and layered desert background shots. As well as external and internal shots of ornithopters with a naturalistic look, combined with CGI elements that contribute to the appearance and movement of sandworms with a prehistoric look.
The most serious contender for the Oscars in 2024 is Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan’s biographical thriller about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) also uses sophisticated visuals from DNEG. Some of these include Trinity’s explosive test and the visualization of an aspect of quantum physics in the protagonist’s mind. The goal was to conduct laboratory experiments in aquarium tanks for simulated fluids and other materials for quantum physics sequences.
Everything was filmed on camera (including 65mm IMAX) and then processed, layered and uploaded to the computer, just like an atomic explosion. The reason Nolan can claim that there were no CGI in the film is because there was not a single frame produced by a computer simulation. The race for the prize is open, but for now, the only thing that’s certain is that the visual effects of the two strongest films in the category are handled by the same company: DNEG.
