‘Over the Moon’: Chris Evans’ Brother Recalls MCU Star’s Sweet Reaction to His Casting as Barbie

Barbie star Scott Evans recalled his brother, MCU star Chris Evans’ reaction to the news that he had been cast in an upcoming Greta Gerwig film. Based on the iconic Mattel toy line, Barbie stars Margot Robbie as the lead doll who, along with Ken (Ryan Gosling), leaves Barbie Land and steps into the real world. There are multiple versions of both Ken and Barbie in the film, one of which is played by Evans.

Ahead of Barbie’s release date, Evans recalled in a recent interview with ET what it was like to be cast in the next film. The actor revealed that his brother, who previously played Captain America, had a particularly sweet reaction to the news. Here’s Evans’ full comment:

“I would say ‘lost my mind’ is a very understatement! When I found out I’d been selected, it was a moment of reflection and then it was ‘I’ve got to call people!’ And I video call my boyfriend, I video call my mom.

“The third call (to Chris) was like ‘Hey, guess what!’. I mean, I think, he was more enthusiastic than anybody… He was in cloud nine. He could not believe it.”

Long before the first Barbie trailer was released, much interest was generated by announcements from the cast that the film would feature different versions of the beloved doll. The casting of Emma Mackey, in particular an actress who bears a striking resemblance to Robbie, has generated a lot of interest online. It was eventually confirmed that McKay, along with Hari Neff, Nicola Coughlan, Rita Arya, Kate McKinnon, Dua Lipa, and Issa Rae, would all play different versions of Barbie.

Similarly, in addition to Gosling, the film Cannes stars Evans, John Cena, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir and Nkuti Gatwa. While many questions remain unanswered about where Barbie Land is actually located in the world of the film, the trailer makes it clear that it’s a place completely filled with different versions of Barbie and Ken. For example, Robbie’s character lives in a pink Barbie Dreamhouse across the street from other Barbie Dreamhouses.

The trailer at least partially explains how this is possible, confirming that the Robbie and Kane characters are in fact dolls manufactured by Mattel. While all other Barbies and Kens share certain characteristics in common, such as disproportionately placed feet and a lack of existential curiosity, Robbie’s character is an outsider, leading him on a path of self-discovery. Many questions remain about what will happen to Barbie, but the movie is certainly shaping up to be an interesting exploration of the beloved Mattel toy.
