Like every summer, shooting season is in full swing in Turin. In recent weeks, Netflix’s La legge di Lidia Poët 2, directed by Matteo Rovere with Mathilde De Angelis, and Fireworks, the Rai mini-series filmed by Susanna Nicchiarelli in the Val di Susa, have captured everyone’s attention. In addition, at the beginning of the month, MasterChef stopped at the Il Melograno restaurant on Via Gaudenzio Ferrari.
However, thanks to the support of the film commission Torino Piemonte, much more boils in the cauldron. Starting with The Count of Monte Cristo, a French-English-Italian co-production featuring Palomar Carlo Degli Esposti. 8 episodes will be filmed between Turin, Paris, Malta and Rome and broadcast by Rai in 2024. A very famous director was chosen, the Dane Bille August, who twice received the Palme d’Or at Cannes. In 1993, he signed a film adaptation of Isabelle Allende’s The House of Spirits with Jeremy Irons, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Winona Ryder, Antonio Banderas, Vanessa Redgrave, Vincent Gallo.
After filming last fall, the fourth (and final) season of My Brilliant Friend, Lost Child Story, 8 episodes, is back in town to film some additional scenes, airing on Paradise in early 2024. The roles of Lila and Lena for adults will be performed by Irene Majorino and Alba Rohrwacher in the production of David di Donatello by Laura Bispuri. The set will always be close to Crocetta, starting today in the area between Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Via San Quintino.
August is the month of “Sei nell’anima”, a biography of Gianna Nannini created by Indiana and intended for Rai 1. It will commemorate the beginnings of the Sienese singer in Milan in the seventies, until 2004. Gianna will be played by Letizia. Toni (Apprentice 3) with her Selena Caramazza and Stefano Rossi Giordani, with Andrea Delogu as Nannini’s discoverer, Mara Maionci. The script (on which the rocker also collaborated) is signed by Donatella Diamanti and Cosimo Calamine, directed by Cinzia T. Torrini.
Then there are a couple of series that partially move from Milan to Turin for the second season. The first is “Snow White” from the novel by Francesca Tassini and Mario Pasqualotto, Ray Ragazzi’s debut in a detective story. Directed by Niccolò Sacchi and Giovanni Bedeschi, starring Christine Perez, Clarissa Malavasi, Federico Di Scola and Valeria Barreca, it follows the misadventures of a vlogger who disappeared into thin air and the search for brothers Elia and Kennedy in the imaginary Italian city of Flor. Filming took place at the end of June in the Corso Vittorio area. The second series that moves from Brianza to Turin is Block 181 by Skye, a crime mafia conceived and interpreted by rapper Salmo. Its originality lies in the choice to tell the world of the underworld not in the usual Southern Italy, but in the suburbs of the Lombard capital. Filming will begin in September, and 8 new episodes will air on Sky Atlantic in 2024.
Work has already begun on the television series Sul più bello, based on the trilogy of teen films of the same name produced by Eagle Pictures and Prime Video, which has been an exceptional success on Netflix. Since the winning team does not change, everything remains the same, as in the three films: the script will again be written by Roberto Proya with Francesca Marino, the cast, consisting of Ludovica Francesconi, Josef Gyura, Guy Maschiale and Giancarlo Commare, is confirmed. Directed by Marino, filming will begin in the city center on September 4 and will run for eight weeks. I always look forward to the international remake of the first film, which is already being worked on in Mexico and the USA.
