Poland condemns two Belarusian helicopters for violating its airspace

Krakow (Poland), 1 August (EFE) – The Chargé d’affaires ad interim at the Belarusian embassy was summoned after two Belarusian military helicopters entered Polish airspace on Tuesday, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Tuesday.

“The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly protests this and urges Belarus to explain the incident in detail immediately,” the agency said in a brief statement.

“The Polish side stressed that the incident was seen as another factor in the escalation of tensions on the Poland-Belarus border,” the ministry added, expressing its hope that Belarus would stop such activities.

Not long ago, Polish Defense Minister Marius Blaschak convened a meeting of the National Security Council to clarify the current border situation.

“The intrusion took place in the Białowieza area at a very low altitude, which made it difficult for radar systems to detect it,” the ministry said, which is why the ministry denied previous incursions.

Blaschak notified NATO of the incident and ordered an increase in the number of soldiers and allocation of resources to protect the Belarusian border.

According to the Polish Ministry of Defense, Belarusian helicopters are taking part in military training exercises that Minsk previously informed Warsaw.

“Due to the potential for further provocation, we call for the responsible dissemination of information and comments that could be exploited by the Russian and Belarusian regimes,” the Defense Ministry statement concluded.

The Polish government has expressed concern over a possible escalation of tensions along the border in recent weeks since Russian mercenaries from the Wagner Group stationed in neighboring Belarus.
