Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced the birth of their daughter on Sunday.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex named the girl Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.The little girl was born last Friday in a hospital in Santa Barbara, California (USA).
Both the mother and the girl are healthy and well, it is noted in the statement released on Sunday.
Buckingham Palace, the official headquarters of the British royal family, celebrated the girl’s arrival.
“The Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted with the news”, the notification says.
The couple claimed they named their daughter Lilibet after the royal family’s nickname for the Queen, the baby’s great-grandmother.
Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her “beloved late grandmother,” the Princess of Wales, according to the statement.
Lilibet is the eleventh great-granddaughta of the queen and the eighth in the line of succession to the throne.
“On June 4, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili,” reads the message of thanks on the couple’s Archewell website.
“She’s more than we could have imagined. and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we have received from around the world,” he adds.
“Thank you for the continued kindness and support during this special time for our family,” reads the statement that does not accompany any photos of the girl.
The message adds that anyone who wants to send gifts for the birth of the little girl is asked to instead “support or become more interested” in organizations that help women and girls.
Charles, Prince of Wales and Harry’s father, alongside the Duchess of Cornwall tweeted: “Congratulations to Harry, Meghan and Archie on the arrival of baby Lilibet Diana. We wish them well at this special time.”
Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted sending his “many congratulations” to the couple.
Meghan’s friend Misan Harriman, who took black and white photographs of the couple for the announcement of their pregnancy, also posted her congratulatory message on the social network: “Lilibet has arrived! Congratulations to my brave friend and her lovely family!”.
Lilibet “Lili” Diana is the second daughter of the couple, after Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor who was born in May 2019. The couple married in May 2018.
Recently, Prince Harry has publicly reflected on parenthood saying he wanted to “break the cycle” of the “pain and suffering” of raising him with his own children.
He and Meghan relinquished their roles as royals in March 2020. Last month, the duke said moving to the US had not been part of the plan, but that he felt he had to prioritize his family and mental health.
As a result of the move, Lilibet is the highest-ranking member of the British royal family in the current line of succession who was born abroad and who would be eligible to become president of the United States.
But like Archie, who was not entitled to a royal title when she was born, Lilibet would not be allowed to be called princess until Queen Elizabeth II dies and Prince Charles becomes king, according to rules established more than 100 years ago.
