Tokyo, Nov. 28 (Jiji News Agency) — Prince Hitachi, the younger brother of Emperor Akihito and uncle of Emperor Naruhito, celebrated his 88th birthday on Tuesday.

The prince underwent kidney stone surgery in March and was later hospitalized with a urinary tract infection. In August, he contracted COVID-19 but recovered and returned to public duties.

The prince now spends much of his time in a wheelchair, according to the Imperial Household Agency. However, he also does walking exercises and stretches with a physical therapist at home twice a week and three times a month in the hospital.

At his residence in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward, the prince enjoys watching news, sports and dramas on television.

He also looks after a miniature dachshund named Fuki, and on nice days he enjoys walking in the gardens with his wife, Princess Hanako, and sometimes birdwatching.
