Chris DiMarco is best known as almost Defeated Tiger Woods in his prime.
He lost to Woods in a playoff at the 2005 Masters and finished runner-up to Woods again at the 2006 Open. Just before those two heartbreaks, he lost to Vijay Singh in a playoff at the 2004 PGA Championship. Although DiMarco won four times on the PGA Tour and earned more than $22 million in prize money, his career will always include a series of high-profile “what ifs.”
However, on Wednesday, DiMarco changed his tune among golf fans after making some surprising remarks on the latest episode of Golf’s “Subpar.”
“We kind of want LIV to acquire the Champions Tour,” DiMarco said. “Let’s play a little real money here. When we got $2 million, it was a joke. There were about seven guys from the TPC last week who made more money than We still have plenty of money in our wallets.”
The comment may have been tongue-in-cheek (you can decide for yourself in the video below – head to the 12:05 mark), but the comments didn’t go down well online. DiMarco received a lot of attention after the comments were shared on social media.
In DiMarco’s five-plus years on the Champions Tour, he has yet to record a win and only four top-10 finishes. Despite his poor performance, he earned more than $1.2 million during his retirement.
“You’re talking about money earned in a generation (LIV),” DiMarco said. “They deserve it, they’ve had some great careers – why not go get some money?”
Golf talk seems to be dominated by money on a daily basis, and the divisiveness caused by money may have something to do with the sport’s poor television ratings this season. The Chris DiMarcos of the world don’t seem to realize it just yet, though—if social media is any indication, golf fans don’t have much sympathy for his “career.”
