The Dutch Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that two public servants, one an employee of the Security and Counter-Terrorism Agency (NCTV) and the other a police officer, had been arrested on suspicion of “leaking state secrets.”
The written statement made by the Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that a 64-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were arrested on October 26, 2023, on suspicion of possessing and disclosing information constituting a state secret.
The statement said the 64-year-old suspect, who lives in Rotterdam, worked for both NCTV and the Dutch police’s national police unit, while the woman, who lives in Gouda, was a former employee of the Dutch police. NCTV and recently joined the police force.
Searches were conducted in many places
The statement stressed that the defendants, who were issued a 14-day detention order and a number of restrictions, were only allowed to meet with their lawyers.
The statement stated that no additional information will be provided at this stage in order to preserve the security of the investigation, and searches have been conducted in many places within the scope of the investigation.
It is doubtful that the information was leaked to Morocco
The AD newspaper story titled “A translator and analyst working for the counter-terrorism establishment is suspected of leaking state secrets to Morocco” included a claim that the suspects in question were suspected of passing information to the Moroccan government.
News reported that the 64-year-old suspect, who worked as a translator and analyst for NCTV, had access to sensitive files at the police’s Counter-Terrorism, Extremism and Radicalization (CTER) Department.
